Liverpool: Virgil van Dijk had a role in Cody Gakpo signing, says Jurgen Klopp
Virgil van Dijk, the captain of the Netherlands, reportedly had a part in Cody Gakpo's acquisition, according to Jurgen Klopp, who thought that Liverpool's allure was the main attraction.
The Dutch attacker will join the Reds from PSV Eindhoven in a move of 40–50 million euros (£35.4–44.3 million).
At the most recent World Cup in Qatar, Gakpo, 23, was a standout, scoring three goals to help the Netherlands advance to the quarterfinals.
Klopp remarked, "We didn't need Virgil to persuade him.
"Virgil was involved from a certain point on, but when I was given permission to speak to him, we didn't since there was no justification for it.
When you are the manager of Liverpool and you believe you need to persuade someone, but after speaking with them, you see the door is wide open, you know this is pretty much a home run.
Gakpo has been in excellent form for PSV this season, with 12 assists and nine goals in 14 league appearances.
In five Europa League games, he also managed three goals and two assists.
Gakpo stated to Liverpool's official website that they had spoken over the phone frequently recently.
"He advised me that making this transfer will help me grow as a player and advance, and that although the club is very large and powerful, it also seems like a true family.
"Since I'm a family man, I believe that's something else that matters much to me. He simply spoke positively.
"He can assist me with a few things, which is another reason I'm glad he's here. I'm really thankful to be here."
On January 2, Liverpool plays Brentford, however, it's possible that by then the paperwork would already be in order for Gakpo to make his debut.
Gakpo has joined other strikers Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz, and Roberto Firmino in the attack, giving the Reds plenty of competition.
Jota and Diaz are now sidelined, but when asked if Firmino's future at the club may be affected by Gakpo's acquisition, Klopp added: "No.
"Bobby and I had a conversation. From my perspective, I firmly believe that he should remain. There is no effect.
"You'd have to ask Bobby if it affects him."
